Just thought I would also take the opportunity that some people speak more than one language. English might not be the first one they learned, so it may not be as accurate as someone who only uses one and has many years to perfect it. Which makes me wonder how many languages people are fluent in when they are the first on the bandwagon to poke fun at someones mistakes.

Perhaps you could take it as a compliment. For you it might be seen to be out of character but just normal for me.

You don't hear "chink" used very often in Australia and when it is used it is not seen as being too derogatory. The most common derogatory term is slope and also power point with the latter mainly used in reference to the Vietnamese. If someone is very educated such as a doctor they will use "chinaman"

As to racism, the term is rarely used in its true sense, that is, the person is inferior due to their race. That is quite different from not liking them. Actually, it is more the culture that is disliked.

I served (attached to) with the Artillery and if you said you are as think as two short planks - this was considered to be a bit of an insult

history behind this is

when the artillery soldiers died they used to use them as "planks" to get the guns out of the mud - (First world War)

so not a nice term to use -not sure what it means outside of the forces, any ideas ???
