Ken,

If ever you get to Australia and come shooting, then we will make sure no one uses the word coon or any other four letter words.:D

Thanks - You're such a gentleman. :):)

Don't let an old fuddyduddy with too much time on his hands get to you , we all knew what you meant and thought it merely a typo.
Ken's well meaning at heart but he is a yank. :D

Just thought I would also take the opportunity that some people speak more than one language. English might not be the first one they learned, so it may not be as accurate as someone who only uses one and has many years to perfect it. Which makes me wonder how many languages people are fluent in when they are the first on the bandwagon to poke fun at someones mistakes.

Col & Rich have been attempting to master english for a long time and still screw it up by using words like Chin... Never mind, this thread has become to civil to bring that up again... :):):)

I think I'll quit this line of discussion, with my spelling, grammar and typing skills I'm onto a loser.

Wrong time of the year:eek::D

Big wuss!

Nice ride today - couple of hundred miles - down to Brighton and along the coast then back up from Dover way to the bridge then home for steak and chips.

Luvvly Jubbly

Loads of planks of wood on Brighton beach from that sunken cargo ship in the channel.

Isn't it odd that Mike can use phrases like 'coons', and foul language without any American protest - yet Rich and I use the word 'chinky' to describe a meal and we're made out to be the devils incarnate.

That's Americans for you I suppose - never consistent, always hypocritical.

Perhaps you could take it as a compliment. For you it might be seen to be out of character but just normal for me.:D

You don't hear "chink" used very often in Australia and when it is used it is not seen as being too derogatory. The most common derogatory term is slope and also power point with the latter mainly used in reference to the Vietnamese. If someone is very educated such as a doctor they will use "chinaman"

As to racism, the term is rarely used in its true sense, that is, the person is inferior due to their race. That is quite different from not liking them. Actually, it is more the culture that is disliked.

No, it's just the Yanks wanting to have a go at Rich and Me. It's the way they are, you can say what you like and get away with it.

Basically it boils down to discrimination, but obviously they would not accept that.

Never mind eh?

Perhaps you could take it as a compliment.

If being called a Nazi and a racist is a compliment then I'm not sure I want to hear a derogatory remark.

All because we use the word 'chinky' (to describe a meal)?

Col

Well we know that many people down south are as thick as 2 short planks.:D

Brian

Just kidding Col

I'll add you to my list - come the glorious day. . . . .

Well the planks are washed up, wooden and thick?

Is the glorious day being brought forward?

on the note of planks

I served (attached to) with the Artillery and if you said you are as think as two short planks - this was considered to be a bit of an insult

history behind this is

when the artillery soldiers died they used to use them as "planks" to get the guns out of the mud - (First world War)

so not a nice term to use -not sure what it means outside of the forces, any ideas ???

Having heard it since I was knee high to a grasshopper i just thought it meant very stupid. I would be interested to hear where it came from and what it actually means if different.
