in the original story this is taking into account all the movies and the books starting from the beginning, the galactic republic was a democratic collection of planets and systems, similar to the UN they ran everything, though the UN doesnt. some systems were not part of the republic yada yada. then the times of the civil war with the outlying systems count dooku and the trade federation all set into motion by then senator palpatine. around episode three when the war is in full swing palpatine had the senate give him basically unlimited power. so in the ashes of the old republic he built the first galactic empire. that is what the rebels were fighting in episode IV. just FYI

Nicely put...

So Chavez of Venezula is moving towards the evil empire by giving himself more power and changing the constitution, limiting media outlets and nationalizing resources?

yeah Chavez is kinda crazy IMHO, with nationalizing everything and basically saying if he is not kept in power until at least 2031 the whole thing will collapse

Well this is funny. All the Euros who blame the US for making terrorism worse....well who the hell did Russia attack?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070117/ap_on_re_eu/russia_terror_threat

Did they invade Iraq...or Afghanstan...not lately...maybe 20 years ago.

They have their own muslim popluation thats causing hell...could we say that due to Russia's act towards Chechyna that it has caused terror threats to go up?

Englands next...Mohammed is more popular than the name George now...oh boy. It cant just sit back on your little island and think that if we just sit around and chill out then the world would be great...

"The country has seen high-profile terrorist incidents in recent years. They included hostage-takings and subway and airline bombings linked to the 12-year conflict in mostly Muslim Chechnya, where large-scale fighting ended years ago but an insurgency continues."

Thank Christ for that. George reminds me of a stupid American chimp:rolleyes:
Oh and what the hell's Chechnya got to do with England (Actually it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
Now we all know Yanks are bloody lazy when it comes to using the English Language correctly, but you could try!

George hasn't been a very popular name for years.

One popular surname in the UK is Singh

No, we just aren't stuck in the "old ways" like you Europeans are. We aren't afraid to modify things for better use.

Their authorities tend to harm innocent bystanders with their "anti-terrorist" measures as well

Russia's human rights records in Chechnya is appalling. Not advocating terrorism here, but the scenario differs from the UK by the fact that the authorities supported the degradation of ethnic minorities while in the UK it is simply the thuggish element.
