But Ken, we like our licence, it means that the BBC does not have to answer to big business , we get good drama , no interruptions , and first class news that tells us the truth about American warmongering, when its not lying about Tony Bliar.

Seems like a reasonable set up. I enjoy bbc america at times as well. Really, the 'Are you being served' bunch is about like the beverly hill billies... Other than checkin on the weather in the morning about all I care for are the fix-it shows...

I have a black and white one in the shed, it's a 1970's Sony, works perfectly. Also another black and white one spare in the loft somewhere.

No, we do not have a TV or Radio licence fee in Canada. We do have a state owned broadcaster called CBC (or Radio Canada for the French language service). It is patterned on the BBC. 100% supported by tax dollars with considerably fewer commercials than the private broadcasters.
I missed the bit about the Black&White TV. Are the licences fees the same in the UK for colour and B&W? Would be lower for B&W one would think.
From an old episode of Coronation Street. The detector vans apparently do not have any electronic gear. They know who haven't paid because you didn't renew your licence. They sit out front of the house until they can see the telly go on. The trick it seems is to NEVER pay the licence fee. That way they have no record of you having a TV. It seems that when you fail to renew each year is how they track you down.

If you don't have a licence for your TV at home then you need one for a portable or one in your car.And what about a tv in a car?, Or a portable tv in the park? I'm seeing a mr.bean or benny hill thing going on here

if it runs off batteries then you don't need a licenses ...
(might of changes recently)
so if you run your TV off a battery (and the battery is not connected to mains) then techically you don't need a license..
not sure how this would stand up in court - but caravans have tv in the UK and when they are mobile and moving from park to park etc
or it could be the 3 month rule -
