How come? Is it something to do with altitude?

Yep, we are a mile high, so the atmosphere is noticeably thinner up here, which means there is less oxygen to breathe.

We Coloradoans are big on conserving oxygen :D

Hmm, about the same as Johannesburg then? You soon get used to it. The big problem is getting used to the difference in cooking times :D

I don't think he would taste very good at all.

You never know. Mark Twain did a short story about politicians and cannibalism. I think it was called "Cannibalism in the Cars". One of the funniest (but morbid) stories I've ever read.

Rich: Yes, poorer. I'm traveling on my own nickel right now, and getting either disaster insurance reimbursement or FEMA disaster travel assistance is a Byzantine maze.

yeah i'll give you that one , one of my gripes is that people get reams of paper , and its up to you to read it - some insurnace companies hide behind the FSA by saying well you had the information ,90 % of people don't have time to read policy wordings - i am a great beliver in pointing out the main points answering question on specific , but hell the insurance i sell is not for joe public - its pretty specialised, and when we get someone who is neww to it , i take the time to talk to them about it and they get my direct line,

so if they have a question about it or a problem then they pick up the phone

in the same industry for 15 years and i recon that i retain 90-95% of my customer base and have people look me up upon referrals (Ok my spelling isn't great) but the client like that they can call and speak to a human and one who actual did the insurance . they also get to see me at various events ,

Doc - you seem to think that wherever you go in the USA there will be a natural disaster.

Why is it that there are many Americans who post here yet it is only New Orleans based posters that have a problem in this area. I haven't heard Cindy or anyone else suffering. You could move there and save masses on insurance and peace of mind and give stability to your immediate family. Surely safety of your own family is paramount, what brothers sisters and other relatives do is not your problem, why stay where they are?

Surely there are plenty of jobs available in the land of milk and honey.

I'm home, the house is intact, and the ISP is back on-line.

As to why more is heard about disasters from the New Orleans area: I guess I'm more vocal than some. Also, it's a matter of odds. Yes, there WILL be some natural and very unpleasant phenomenon everywhere. A hurricane just affects more people at once.

As to why I don't move: Jobs abound for technical people, but not for me, Colin. I'm too old and have family issues.

Too old: I'm now 60, which means I'll be retiring in a few years. Nobody would want to hire me for anything but a temporary - and therefore generally lower paying - job.

Family: As long as the kids don't disperse, the wife wants to stay in the area. As long as my mother-in-law is still alive and kicking, wifey wants to stay where she can help. Thus I'm bound to the New Orleans area for a couple of years yet. Which is unfortunate because we are a technically depressed area. In 1984-1985, the oil industry bottomed out over in my area, making it very difficult to jump from job to job.

When I first took the job with the Navy contract, I could have gone elsewhere instead. But having made that choice 20 years ago, I've been enjoying the ride all this time. Got married, became a grandpa, became an MVP in that time. Now, I'm too close to the end of the primary career to change now. Inertia, I guess.
