I started a thread yesterday regarding the return of BobLarson. In it I was asking Bob a question regarding a comment he made before he left. I merely wanted clarification on a comment he made.

I cast no doubts on his Access skills, in fact I was complimentary.

The thread has now been deleted. No notification to me, I have no idea why it was deleted or who did it.

Is this right? Can a non-spam, non foul language thread be deleted at the whim of some jumped-up mod? Surely I have a right to ask a question seeking clarification of a remark one member made to another.

Or is it wrong to question anything on these forums?

Can I have an explanation as to who did it and why? I feel I have that right, or are my human rights not of any use on these forums.

Colin,

I am not aware of thread you are referring to, and as such you can rule me off you list of suspects.

It's ok David - I know it was done in the night, so that usually points to USA members. The great democratic dictatorship.

Put simply: no - there's no reason why they should be. This is a privately-owned message board - the only rights you have here are those that the owners and their representatives decide to grant you.

Your basic human right to free speech just means that nobody should break down your door in the middle of the night and duct tape your mouth shut.

Your right to post messages here is in principle the same kind of right I have to write messages on the shirt you are wearing - you may choose to let me write on your shirt, or you may require me not to - either way, my basic rights are not affected.

Shrimp - I notice you have deleted the part of your post which referred to bad manners.

However, I do agree with you, again this does point to an American as the culprit, probobly working under instruction from Lord Bob himself.
I doubt whether the culprit will be man enough to confess and explain the reasoning behind it, especially when they allow such foul language through on other posts as the norm.

This is my 10th year as a member of these forums, I'm disgusted - I feel that an innocent post asking a question should not be deleted just because somebody doesn't like it.

Lord Bob said I had "mental issues" after a comment I made regarding the death of John Lennon - I was merely enquiring of Bob to expand on his 4,000 mile remote broad spectrum diagnosis.

I dont know why it was deleted but it doesn't take a genius to work out a possible reason, it is most likely another attempt at upsetting people and generally causing trouble by you and then pretending you meant it all in good faith and arguing the toss.

Just get a life!

The first two words of this paragraph exposes your true motives.

You take pleasure in antagonism. A very sorry trait indeed.

Shrimp - I notice you have deleted the part of your post which referred to bad manners.
I re-worded some of the other parts and considered that the closing sentence was just a repetition of the others (which are already somewhat repetitive). Since you noticed, however, and appear to find the change significant, here's what I said (from memory):
Atomic Shrimp said:

I hope you'll excuse me for observing that you'd probably think that anyway, as you seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder about America and its citizens.

Tsunami in a teapot. Unplug - the weekend is nearly here - does any of this actually matter?

Colin -
your opening statement on this is a bit loaded - and was almost (not quite) a personal attack - i read it and thought - that your comments were loaded to say the least -
and could be considered to be rude -

Bob has been an asset to this forum - and you seem to be dragging old history up - rather than letting sleeping dogs lie ...
As to who removed the post no idea but I am kinda glad they did -
we all have a go at bashing the Yanks now and then and this is fine - but not an individual -

Have you considered another forum Col. Why not try Bobs?

Well, I was the one who reported on the original thread. My message sent was, from my memory, basically: "Personal grievances between members should be kept to PM."

I do think that the original thread was unnecessary and antagonistic. In principle, I don't agree with deleting threads, though I definitely would have had locked it if I were a moderator with a note telling you to knock it off and PM Bob if it's so important to you.

The forums isn't here to one-up others.

I don't agree with deleting threads, .
Well that's odd, the original target of the post deleted in excess of 20,000 of mine here, pity you weren't here at the time

Oh do you now.

So it's ok for a member (who is/was a mod) to accuse another member of having "mental issues" and then buggering off for a few months with no further explanation?

So I wait, and when he deemed to return, naturally I asked for clarification of his antagonistic remark, so my request gets deleted.

One rule for Yanks and another for the rest is it?

Col

BTW - Bob saw fit to diagnose he thought I had mental issues in public so why should I PM him to seek clarification?

BTW2 - Bob has not got the ability to receive PM's switched on in his profile, so I couldn't PM him if I tried.

...Or you could just get over it. Have you really held this question in for months, waiting for him to return so you could interrogate him? With that alone, I would say he can rest his case. It sounds like you do have mental issues.

And maybe he has PMs turned off for this very reason. He doesn't want to talk to you about it. Why voice it out loud in the public forums so he could publicly ignore you? Just put it to rest already.

You also keep stating that deleting your topic is a typical American thing to do, but it appears there are plenty of UK members agreeing that it was the right thing to do, judging by the posts above, as the majority of the replies indicate the belief that you started that thread only to antagonize another long standing and respected member. It seemed to serve no other purpose.

Hi everybody!

Hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread for a moment.
I'm having a lovely weekend. How is everyone else's?

I have some wonderful news.
I'm buying a house on Monday.

It will be the second house we have ever owned.
It was a short sale. Don't know if everyone knows what that is, and I barely understand it myself, but a short sale is where the owner sells the property for less than they owe the bank and the bank has to decide if it will accept the payment as payment in full. Now, I also have no idea if the bank then holds the original owner to some sort of deal where they have to pay the balance of the amount due in other terms... maybe someone else can tell me that.

But anyway. It is a lovely home, absolutely lovely and I'm really excited about it. We are not selling our current home, but hope to rent it out until the market can sustain its eventual sale at a profit I deem fitting. That will take years, I'm sure.

We've never been landlords before. A bit nervous about that part. Hope we're not in for nightmare stories. But I'm optomistic. We've always been good tenants and I do believe in karma.... so there.

Speaking of wonderful landlords.... I have a story.

:)

The first house we ever rented was this little tiny place (by "Yanks" standards anyway) Not even 900 sq ft. (Too lazy to find the metrics calculator for you all right now, so figure the conversion out yourself.)

We rented the place when we were first married, from a lovely widowed woman named Hazel. She was about 65 at the time. Her son still lived with her, her daughter lived next door with her husband, Gene.

The place rented for $300 a month when we moved in. A year later, Hazel said to us, "Gene says I need to raise your rent $20 a month." We were so young.... just 21 and 22 at the time.... and we just had our first baby. I wasn't expecting a yearly increase in rent. And my husband was just working as a golf course maintenance man for a piitance, as I was staying home and taking on the traditional role of wife and mother. "Okay" we said. "We understand"

Hazel looked at me and the baby and said, "How about I reduce your rent $20 a month. Just don't tell GENE!!!"

What a wonderful woman.

Oh... LOL... I forgot to mention..... she was a Yank too.
There are nice people over here that you meet every now and then.
And I looked it up online last week. She's still alive.
I want to go over and give her the $500 she didn't charge us for the two more years we lived there. I think that would be nice. That was 25 years ago that we rented her little house. I can't wait to see her face again and thank her for her kindness.

And if you are interested, PM me and I'll give you the link to my photobucket where there are pictures of the house. There are also some lovely shots of vacations I've taken (I know... yawn..... but I'm not a bad photographer!) and my family. And children.... not so many of me! I'm usually behind the camera!

What an awesome rabbit trail! It is still odd for me to think of all Americans as Yanks, now as I lived in CT for 14 years, I am used to being called a Yank by all of my Texas friends, but now they're Yanks too, at least to the rest of the world. LOL

...Or you could just get over it. Have you really held this question in for months, waiting for him to return so you could interrogate him?

It's obviously a waste of time though, he hasn't even got the courtesy to respond.

And maybe he has PMs turned off for this very reason. He doesn't want to talk to you about it. Why voice it out loud in the public forums so he could publicly ignore you? Just put it to rest already.

I didn't know he was going to be silent when I asked the question.

as the majority of the replies indicate the belief that you started that thread only to antagonize another long standing and respected member. It seemed to serve no other purpose.

Asking for clarification of a derogatory statement on another member is not antagonistic.

Perhaps you could enlarge on your remote diagnosis. You seem to be an expert in mental issues - try to be less broad spectrum and a little more specific.

please do, it needs lightened up

I have some wonderful news.
I'm buying a house on Monday.
Hooray! Well done!

We've given up renting rooms out, I'm sure if we'd looked for a "better calebre" of lodger, but we did opt to help out the homeless, it didn't work out so good for us, sometimes karma just isn't enough. Have you thought of renting out as a holiday home? Loads of Brits flock to Florida for their holidays and I'm sure it's a better earner.

That was a brilliant story about your first house Tess!

My weekend didn't work start out so well. We won tickets to go see Duran Duran in Concert at Edinburgh Castle. Great venue, just not the best place for metal fans, I regretted not selling the tickets, but you live and learn.

It rained, the music was not to our taste, although very well balanced and overall great if you like the band. We did, however, turn it into a great night out for the two of us, went to dinner, enjoyed just being alone for the first time in how many years...

I'll pm you for that link, I love to look at photos :D

I'm thinking of doing the same, I did it many years ago with a former family member and it didn't really work out then, not sure if I really want to go down that road again
