Colin you need to be a little more specific
France - they eat anything that moves slowly (snails, Frogs legs- well they move slower after the legs have gone), The French gave you the Statue of Liberity -in exchange of a debt -

(Slight case of envy here) .. its cos the weather - the french has decent weather while us brits get the rain, although recently the french are getting a bit concerned as the weather has moved to us and we can now do some decent wine - whereas the last few years te french wine has suffered some what...

France and England have a running disagreement with each other ( well its more of a tiff than anything else) and this has been going on oh say 300-400 years we not one to hold a grudge ...you can trace this back to a battle agincore (I might of spelt this wrong) but it is where you get the v sign from
it was a sign from the English to the French that we still had our bow shooting fingers and the french used to cut these off the english prisoners - we truely whipped there arse on this occasion our losses were few there high thousands .. it is also the first place were someone was killed by a pistol ...

Actually Gary it was the Welsh archers that whipped the French at Agincourt and the aggro between the countries has been going on since the Normans beat the Brits in 1066 and thought that they ruled France and England

I wonder if any Americans have any views on the ongoing French presidential elections.

Note to the US posters. - France is a country in Europe - its the big one between the UK and Spain

Col

Well I almost started a new thread for it but well its France...

Lets see. They have almost no world influence, a GDP growth of about 1.5%, immigration issues...yea they need change.

I hear though its between the socialist women and conservative guy there forgot there names.

I hear if the guy wins it will mean better relations with the US. France for being one of the great powers you have to admit has fallen off the world.

Now is it because its a Socialist state? Hmmm a country where everything is mainly taken care of for you to me would foster laziness. The good thing about capitalism is it fosters competition and rewards people for hard work.

Even Airbus is having issues with production and lost several contracts to Boeing because it couldnt spit out enough planes. The riots they have crazy.

How would so many people be upset when its a socialist govt? See when you give people an inch they want a mile...

THis is quite sad that this occurs - I have never come accross -
what I have come accross is a few (Note Few) US citizens feel that they rule the world and that the world should bow down to them ie Were American so treat us better...

.. whatever the point was is not a problem, however the American representative stood up and stated if they werent running it , then they would effectively destroy the motion -
..

This is not a new attitude one of Pres Wilsons big ideas at the end of WW1 was the League of Nations but after it was set up the US didn't join as it would not make an exception in its rules for the Monroe Doctrine.

I have to say though that the times I've ridden the bike down through France and back, I've always been impressed with their good manners and friendliness. I remember once I stopped for a fag in a village somewhere and a woman brought me out a coffee.

Anyway, I didn't think any US posters would have any comment on the French elections:rolleyes: no American interest - not on the TV news. edit. I see we have one taker

I've nothing against the French as our experiences have been mixed, just like everwhere else, except maybe Isreal, but as a daughter spent a great summer on a kibbutz there I guess thet are getting worn down.

Colin -
also been to France
and while the south is wonderful the north ...humm left a bit to be desired
a for Paris - well you can bomb that place - rude ,arrogant, get out into the country - meet some nice locals - also good sense of humor -having a niggle at the brits all the time - which actual suites our nature (the fench english advert for the Clio is a good point)

in the end I think the french know that if things went tits up the brits would be there for them,

as to the archers you find out soemthing new everyday - the history books just say englsih army (as does the internet- but I am sure you are right, cos in some of the other battles there were irish regiements and they are always classified as English army)

Thinking about it i don't know any references to it either it just seemed to be one of those trivial facts that one has always known, but hmmm our history teacher was Nye Williams from Wales.!!:p

I did not know that. Assuming you didn't just make it up :D, I believe that qualifies as my full daily amount of knowledge to acquire.

As there's limited space in my brain, I'll commit the 'fact' to short term memory, until it can be verified.

That was funny!

Don't know much about French politics or European politics for that matter.
Just another close-minded ignorant American.

But one this is for sure is that politics is corrupt no matter what set you claim!

I like this comment from the article:

"If you want a cheap joke, nothing is easier than to take a swipe at Bush or America. Many British comedians that should know better are aware of this. In my opinion, most people who feel inclined to say such things are generally ill-informed on political matters, and such comments are an attempt to hide their ignorance.

...and this comment is probably the pick of the lot. :D

"Interesting that some people can portray them selves as other nationalities to avoid dealing with situations. Sometimes I wish I had the same luxury and was able to change colour.
