So, in your country; It's OK to ra** and burn a large portion of a city because one person (you don't even know) got a raw deal?
that wasn't the point - the ref I made indicated that the cops who clubbed a bloke senseless were subsequently let off by a mostly white jury with no black representation. Hence the riots, it was seen as yet another cover up and biased towards the whites.

Are you really that dense, as to continue to blame white America for the plight of inner city people?
the inner city people seem to

Palease you might as well blame yourselves for the plight of Africa.
now now - I know the USA is helping loads down there, especially where the oil is

I truly can not believe you actually think that.
I believe for every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows. . . . . . . . ;)

Rodney King was a f*****g moron, strung out on crack

so you don't like him then?
here's a quote from my reference. . . .
King was not found to have been using PCP, but was found to have a blood alcohol level of.19,

Actually it is his fault; personally and historically.
I remember reading somewhere that the Bush admin stopped the funding for the upgrade of the dykes, then diverted the money to the war, which is much more fun. Any truth in that?

Incidentally, did you know that more US military has been killed in Iraq than people were killed in the twin towers falling over?

Nikky - I spent several years going to a christian church, I got involved with the "senior" members there because my brother-in-law was a deacon.

I just could not believe the hypocritical attitude of them (the members). They despised "non-believers". The treasurer skimmed 10% of the offering. They openly slagged of other members. They had affairs with others wives. They lived a "non-christian" life during the week and became "christians" on sundays. It was awful, and this was a Baptist church.

I gave up because I couldn't live my life as being a hypocritical lie.

Yikes! Not the sort of answer I was expecting, but it does explain a lot.

I was more interested in statistics. We've seen the Christian (and all it's many branches - Catholic, Mormon, Anglican, etc. etc. etc. - nearly as many variations as ice creams in America ;) ) and atheist and pantheist/agnostic.
Does no-one on here practise Hinduism or Buddhism?

By the way, I know - without bothering to read all eleven pages - that this thread descended, as it usually does, into a transAtlantic slanging match, which is why I am trying to get the thread back on topic without making a complete tit of myself by losing my temper.

We need to start a new thread but today I have deadlines. I think you will be very impressed with my next thread.

Republican and in particular, Bush Bashing.

If you choose to look at it from that point of view, I'll accept it as his fault. But you can't call it racially motivated.
why not? its well known Bush doesn't like blacks - old Condo is only there as a token black, and female to boot.

If Katrina had happened in California, it would have been cleared and rebuilt within a year.
Even that foreign geezer (who did those porn movies) who's the "guvnor" there would have made sure of that. I forget his name now. . . . .something typically American . . . . . . . . ;)

I never said that. Finding someone to be a complete idiot doesn't mean I don't like him. I don't know him, he's not in my social circle, and quite frankly, his actions did not have an effect on my personal situations, I am therefore indifferent. But he's still a moron.
ColinEssex said:

ok. so I'll retract the crack comment (which incidently isn't PCP, but you knew that:D )...it doesn't make him any less an idiot, it just means he wasn't guilty of using an illegal substance. Don't forget, travelling at over 100mph in a Hyundai, while it is an impressive feat to accomplish, turns the vehicle into a weapon. He was acting in a manner which was dangerous to not only the people around him, but the officers trying to stop him. When the nice officers finally get you to stop and tell you to lay down, you do as you are told. It was one stupid decision in a long list of stupid decisions.

Quite right Nikky. Rich and I do try to keep the Yanks under control but they just ignore us;) or argue every point we make - its so tiresome.

I know all that, and agree - but it was the outcome and way the trial was conducted that prompted the riots.

Are you comparring CA with LA?

This transcends all accounting.

From one, if not the most, educated and wealthy states, to the least.

California and Louisiana represent the furthest extremes of America Life. I’m not sure there is as much difference between European countries as there is between those two states.

Funny thing is old Rodny went to jail just a little while later on a new charge of DUI this time it was drugs.

Here's something I didn't know

Rodney King won a $3.8m damages from the City of Los Angeles.
ref thats got to be worth it - note to self. . . . when's the next flight to LA

also (from the same source)

In July 1991, an independent commission ordered to investigate the LAPD delivered a damning verdict.
Its report documented what it described as the systematic use of excessive force and institutionalised racism.

so I was right, it was racist.:D Surely you can't argue against an independent report.

New Orleans had governmental "issues" long before Katrina came to town...she just provided the catalyst which placed them so squarely in the public eye that they couldn't just be swept under the rug and ignored.

Quite right, Ah-nold would have gone downtown in his Hummer, guns blazing and crushed the puny little girly-man looters.

I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist. But that it was merely an excuse to riot.

Then we have Shaney going on about some scribblings that are thousands of years old that he thinks are relevant to daily life. But Bod obviously doesn't because its >40 years old.

Hey Col,

1. I thought I was following the topic of this thread, with my responses, therefor not hijacking it.

2. I also thought I was answering questions that were asked of me. My faith is mine. I will share it if asked but I do not feel it is my job to convert anyone. If you don't believe then don't, but I really can't see where you found it necessary to throw this in.

3. No matter what someone does or does not believe, I still have enough respect for the individual that taking something that is important to them and throwing degrading verbage at it, is something I won't do.

Shaney, I was trying to indicate that Bod thinks anything 40+ years old is outdated and irrelevant. Whereas your constitution is 200+ years and the bible is thousands, yet both (I understand) are still followed to the letter.

So, how can the latter 2 be relevent? the bible says whatever you want it to, and the constitution says you can all go round like Jesse James carrying a gun.

sorry Jenny - thats at odds with what you said originally when I suggested the LA riots were racist instigated.

Those weren’t actually racial riots.

Geez...have you been watching FOX news again? I said the racial turmoil of the 1960s is no longer a descriptive for present day, i.e. you cannot make comments like Rich's along the lines of "don't lynch anyone on the way home from church". That's like assuming that persons of color are still forced to sit in the back of the bus and drink from separate water fountains.
ColinEssex said:

You lost me on that one:confused: I could have sworn we tried to tell you that the riots were not racially motivated, but the "racial motivation" was an excuse used by the rioters. To use your favorite subject, think "war on terror in Iraq" when you know full well it's all about the oil:rolleyes:

They weren't, as I said racism was an excuse.

I understood the context of what you were saying. I think it the necessity of not calling by my name and using things like "going on" and "scribbling" that I was referring to.

jsanders said:

so what does "excessive force and institutionalised racism" mean then if its not racialist? I take it to mean the LAPD is racial to the core and as a result, you had the riots.

you said they wern't "actually racial riots" - you never mentioned the word "excuse" till later.

Bod said:

no, its American and owned by an Australian (which is basically the same):D.
In case you haven't been there, Australia is a mini version of the USA, its very American in its ways.
